Turning 65 is a milestone—and it comes with an important to-do list. Medicare enrollment has specific deadlines, and missing them can lead to penalties and gaps in coverage. Use this checklist to make sure you're prepared.

12 Months Before You Turn 65

  • Learn the basics: Understand the difference between Part A, Part B, Part D, Medicare Advantage, and Medigap
  • Review your current coverage: If you have employer insurance, find out how it coordinates with Medicare
  • Talk to a licensed advisor: Get personalized guidance on what plans make sense for your situation (that's what I'm here for!)

3 Months Before Your Birthday

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month. During this time:

  • Enroll in Part A and Part B through Social Security (online at ssa.gov or in person)
  • Decide on your path: Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D, or Medicare Advantage
  • If choosing Medigap: Start comparing plans 6 months prior to your 65th birthday to give yourself the best options

Your Birthday Month

  • Confirm your enrollment: Make sure you've received your Medicare card
  • Enroll in Part D if you're going with Original Medicare

3 Months After Your Birthday

  • IEP ends: This is your last chance to enroll without potential penalties
  • Coverage begins: Depending on when you enrolled, coverage starts the 1st of the month you turn 65 or the following month
  • Notify your employer: If transitioning from employer coverage, coordinate the switch

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Waiting too long to enroll and facing late penalties
  • Skipping Medigap Open Enrollment and losing guaranteed issue rights
  • Not reviewing Part D options for your specific medications
  • Assuming Medicare Advantage is automatically better because of $0 premiums
