What Is the Medigap Open Enrollment Period and Why It Matters

If there's one Medicare deadline you absolutely cannot afford to miss, it's the Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month window is your best (and sometimes only) chance to get a Medicare Supplement plan without medical underwriting. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is the Medigap Open Enrollment Period?

The Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, 6-month window that begins on the first day of the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this period, you have guaranteed issue rights—meaning:

  • Insurance companies cannot deny you a Medigap policy
  • They cannot charge you more based on health conditions
  • Pre-existing conditions cannot be used against you

Why This Window Is So Important

Outside of this period, insurance companies can (and often do):

  • Deny your application based on health history
  • Charge significantly higher premiums
  • Exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions

In some states, there are additional protections, but for most people, the Medigap Open Enrollment Period is the golden window for getting the best plan at the best price.

When Does It Start?

Your Medigap OEP starts automatically when both of these are true:

  • You are 65 or older
  • You are enrolled in Medicare Part B

For most people, this means it starts on the first day of the month they turn 65. If you delay Part B (because you have employer coverage, for example), your Medigap OEP starts when Part B begins.

What Plans Can You Get?

During your OEP, you can enroll in any Medigap plan sold in your state, including the most comprehensive options:

  • Plan G: Covers nearly everything except the Part B deductible
  • Plan N: Similar to G with small copays, often lower premiums
  • High-Deductible Plan G: Lower premiums with a higher annual deductible

What If I'm on Medicare Advantage?

If you enrolled in Medicare Advantage when you turned 65 and later want to switch to Original Medicare + Medigap, you may face medical underwriting. Some people discover this too late and find they can't get a Medigap plan—or can only get one at a much higher price.

This is one reason I always encourage new Medicare beneficiaries to carefully consider their options during the initial enrollment window.
